Title: Installation of Additional Urea Trays in Urea Reactors (11/21- R01)
UNFCCC Reference No: 0587
Registration Date: 02 July 2007
Date of Monitoring Report: 10 November 2007
B. Location of the Project:
This project was implemented at TCL, Indira Dham, Babrala, District Buduan, Uttar Pradesh, India.
It is located at a distance of 92 Kms. from Badaun and 110 kms.from Bareilly on Chandausi-Babrala
Road. The nearest railway station is Babrala which is 3 kms away. The plant is located at about 150
km from Delhi.
The project was installed in existing space in the Urea plant of the Babrala fertiliser division.
C. Brief Description and Current Status of the Project:
The Urea Reactor in the Urea Plant contained 10 sieve trays to help in CO2 conversion to urea. It
was observed that the urea reactor which operated with conventional trays did not reach the
equilibrium. This was evident from the vapours containing CO2 which were present at reactor
outlet.
Under the energy improvement drive (MANTHAN) and considering CDM opportunities; TCL’s team
approached M/s. Urea Casale for their latest design of High Efficiency Trays for the Urea Reactor.
After various interactions with Casale and internal discussions the scheme was evaluated to
replace the existing trays with 10 new high efficiency Casale Trays. Since the offer from M/s.
Casale was substantially high on the basis of TCL’s IMP (Investment Management Process)
guidelines, it was decided to find an in – house solution for the problem.
Instead of 10 new trays from Casale, TCL’s technical team evaluated the benefits of installing a 15
tray system (by addition of 5 trays). Finally instead of having 10 new trays from Casale, it was
decided to install 15 trays system. The increased number of trays were located at bottom of the
reactor. Five additional trays of 2RE69 material were installed in each reactor to improve the
efficiency of the urea reactor. The entire project was executed indigenously by TCL along with the
expertise of L&T right from the design, fabrication and installation of 15 tray system.
