Godavari Pushkaralu the festival that occurs for only once in 12 years. This year 2015 people have got the chance to celebrate this event. This year’s Pushkaralu is known as Godavari Maha Pushkaralu or Maha Pushkaralu. This is also called as Maha Kumbh for the southern states. This festival is similar to Kumbh Mela. Godavari Maha Pushkaralu has begun from today in both the state i.e. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Maha Pushkaralu would occur for only once in 144 years of span.
The last time Maha Pushkaralu took place at the time where Britishers were ruling us. The next Maha Pushkaralu would be occurring in the year 2159. No one knows who will die and who will be alive until that time. So due to this many pilgrims are attending Godavari Pushkaralu for this only reason. Crores of pilgrims are expected to take a holy dip in the River Godavari. River Godavari flows along the both the states and then finally emerges into Bay of Bengal. Trimbak and Nasik in Maharastra, Dharmapuri, Kaleshwaram, Basara and Bhadrachalam in Telangana State Rajahmundry, Narasapuram, Kovvur and Antarvedi in Andhra Pradesh State these were some of the important places where more number of pilgrims takes a holy dip.

Godavari was born at Trayambak in a Jyotirlinga Temple. From that temple it flows to various temples and then flows along the Bhadrachalam and then emerges in to the Bay of Bengal at Antarvedi. This year Pushkaralu is starting in Ashadha month. To keep things in simple Pushkaralu means festival dedicated to worship of rivers. And in Sanskrit it means that it activates the rivers and then makes purification.

If we take a look at our mythology it is said that Pushkarudu known as God of Pushkar have the powers to make any river holy. These will be travelled with Jupiter planet. This Jupiter travels among various Zodiac signs. So it is said that first 12 days are named as Aadhi Pushkaralu and the later 12 days are named as Anthya Pushkaralu. So these 24 days of Pushkaralu are very auspicious to the pilgrims.

As said above River Godavari start near Nasik, Maharashtra. Then it flows for around 1500 kilometers. It moves to eastwards and then turns to southeast direction. Due to this it enters into the West Godavari and East Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh. Before reaching into these districts it splits up into two paths and finally emerges into the single path and flows into Bay of Bengal. Until a place called Papikondalu many small rivers join this River Godavari. After Papikondalu the river is named as Akhanda Godavari. This is the reason why most of pilgrims consider Rajahmundry as the most sacred and powerful place where River Godavari flows.
