OSHA Fire Extinguisher Spacing

 OSHA Fire Extinguisher Spacing

---

1. Extinguisher Spacing:

Common Fires (Class A):

Extinguishers should be available within 75 feet (23 meters) of the user and the nearest extinguisher.

Flammable Liquid Fires (Class B):

Extinguishers should be available within 50 feet (15 meters) of flammable materials.

Electrical Equipment Fires (Class C):

Extinguishers are placed according to the distribution of Class A or B extinguishers because these fires require extinguishers designed for electrical current.

Metal Fires (Class D):

Used in areas containing flammable metals, and placed at appropriate distances based on risk assessment.

Cooking Oil Fires (Class K):

Place in commercial kitchen areas and within close proximity to cooking equipment.

 ---

2. Installation and Height:

Extinguishers weighing less than 40 lbs (18 kg):

Attach the top of the extinguisher to a height of no more than 5 feet (1.5 m) from the ground.

Extinguishers weighing more than 40 lbs (18 kg):

The top should be no more than 3.5 feet (1 m) from the ground.

Extinguishers should be visible and easily accessible, with a sign or label indicating their location.

---

3. Hazard Identification and Type of Extinguisher:

Assess the types of fires likely to occur on site (e.g., paper, oil, electrical, or metal).

Use extinguishers appropriate to the type of fire likely to occur.

---

4. Accessibility:

Extinguishers should not be hidden or exposed to any obstructions.

Place them in prominent locations near exits or at assembly points.

 ---

5. Maintenance and inspection:

Extinguishers should be inspected monthly to ensure readiness.

Perform periodic maintenance according to the manufacturer's instructions.

---

Additional tips:

Develop an emergency plan that includes maps showing the locations of extinguishers.

Train workers on how to use extinguishers.

Adhering to these instructions helps achieve a safe work environment and reduces losses in the event of fires.
