Eyewash stations should be designed and maintained to meet certain guidelines, including:
Location
Eyewash stations should be easily accessible and kept neat. They should be placed at least 15.3 cm (6 in) from the wall or nearest obstruction and 83.8 to 134.6 cm (33 to 53 in) from the floor.
Activation
Eyewash stations should be designed to activate in less than 1 second and remain operational without the operator's hand on the valve.
Flow
The flow of water or solution should not be so fast that it injures the eyes. The flow should be from the inner eye to the outer corner.
Duration
The user should wash their eyes for at least 15 minutes.
Protection
The nozzles of eyewash stations should be protected from airborne contaminants. The dust covers supplied with the eyewash should be left in place.
Availability
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), eyewash stations should be available in all facilities where there is a risk of exposure to corrosive materials.
Combination stations
Combination safety showers combine an eyewash station and a body safety shower. They are used when there is a risk of exposure to hazardous substances for both the eyes and body
