Here are some safety tips for handling compressed gas cylinders:
Storage
Store cylinders in a fire-resistant enclosure that's well-ventilated, cool, and protected from the weather. Keep them upright and secure with straps, chains, or other supports. Store full and empty cylinders separately, and keep oxygen cylinders at least 20 feet away from flammable gases.
Temperature
Keep cylinders at a temperature of 125°F (50°C) or less. Type E gas cylinders should be stored at a temperature of 93°F (34°C) or less.
Handling
Keep cylinders capped and the regulator off when not in use. When opening a cylinder valve, stand away from the face and in back of the gauge, and open the valve slowly.
Use
Use only regulators, pressure relief devices, valves, hoses, and other equipment designed for the specific cylinder and gas. Don't use a leaking, corroded, or damaged cylinder.
Transportation
Use a cart to transport cylinders, moving the cart within two feet of the cylinder before walking it to the cart.
Protection
Wear eye protection, closed-toe shoes, and loose-fitting insulated gloves when handling cryogenic liquids. Don't wear watches, rings, bracelets, or other jewelry.
Emergency
Have fire extinguishing equipment readily available.
Employers are responsible for ensuring the safe handling and storage of compressed gas cylinders in the workplace.
