The world’s first large-scale green methanol plant has been officially inaugurated in Denmark.

The Kassø e-methanol facility in Aabenraa, near the German border, is also Europe’s second-largest green hydrogen project, using 52.5MW of Siemens Energy PEM electrolysers.

It combines green hydrogen produced using electricity from the adjacent 304MW Kassø Solar Park, the largest solar plant in Northern Europe, with biogenic CO2 captured from the nearby Tønder Biogas facility to produce 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol with a 97% lower carbon footprint than methanol derived from fossil fuels.

The methanol from the plant — which is 51%-owned by Copenhagen-based European Energy with Japanese conglomerate Mitsui holding a 49% stake — already has offtakers lined up, including shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk, Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and the Lego Group.

Maersk will use the green methanol to fuel its Laura Mærsk ship, the world’s first container vessel able to operate on methanol; Lego will use it in the production of plastics; while Novo Nordisk will utilise it to replace existing fossil-fuel-based methanol in its chemicals production.

“We are excited to receive the first e-methanol from the Kassø facility, marking an important milestone in our global efforts to source alternative fuels for our vessel fleet,” said AP Moller-Maersk chief operating officer Rabab Raafat Boulos.

“The future of shipping must include multiple fuel types operating alongside each other, with methanol playing a key role in the industry’s net-zero ambitions.”

European Energy CEO Kund Erik Andersen added: “The start of operations at Kassø marks a major step forward in bringing Power-to-X technologies into real-world use. This is renewable energy in action, transforming how we use electricity.”

And Siemens Energy executive board member Anne-Laure de Chammard stated: “This project ticks all the boxes for establishing a sustainable e-fuel market: committed partners, public funding, innovative technology, and, above all, forward-thinking offtakers.”

The largest green hydrogen project in Europe is the 54MW facility at BASF’s Ludwigshafen complex in Germany.
