DCP FIRE EXTINGUISHER – KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT, PROTECT YOUR WORKPLACE WITH HSE Trainer

A fire can develop within seconds. Knowing which extinguisher to use, how it works, and when NOT to fight the fire can make a critical difference.

WHAT IS A DCP EXTINGUISHER?DCP means Dry Chemical Powder. These extinguishers discharge a fine chemical powder that helps interrupt the combustion process and suppress the flames.
KNOW THE MAIN COMPONENTSBefore an emergency occurs, workers should be familiar with the:
Handle / Lever Assembly
Safety Pin & Seal
Pressure Gauge
Valve Body
Siphon Tube
Cylinder
Dry Chemical Powder
Discharge Hose
Nozzle
Hose Clip / Retainer
Cylinder Base / Foot Ring
REMEMBER THE PASS METHODP – PULL
Pull the safety pin to unlock the operating lever.A – AIM
Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire, not at the top of the flames.S – SQUEEZE
Squeeze the operating lever to discharge the extinguishing agent.S – SWEEP
Move the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire until the flames are controlled.
IMPORTANT: USE THE CORRECT EXTINGUISHER
Class A: Ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper and cloth.
Class B: Flammable liquids such as fuel, oil and paint.
Class C: Flammable gases such as LPG and natural gas — subject to the extinguisher's approved rating and local classification system.
Electrical: Energized electrical equipment requires an extinguisher specifically approved for electrical fire risks.
DO NOT ASSUME EVERY FIRE IS SUITABLE FOR DCP.Always check the extinguisher label, fire classification and site emergency procedure before use.
PRE-USE / ROUTINE CHECKS
Pressure indicator in the acceptable zone
Safety pin and seal intact
Hose and nozzle free from blockage
Cylinder free from serious damage, corrosion or leakage
Extinguisher accessible and clearly identified
Correct extinguisher type available for the hazard
Inspection/service status up to date
WHEN NOT TO FIGHT A FIREDo NOT attempt firefighting if:
The fire is large or rapidly spreading
Heavy smoke is present
Your escape route is blocked
You are not trained or confident
Multiple extinguishers are already ineffective
The situation presents an immediate danger to life
RAISE THE ALARM • INFORM THE EMERGENCY TEAM • EVACUATE TO A SAFE AREA
HSE MESSAGEA fire extinguisher is a first-response device — not a replacement for emergency planning, fire prevention and trained firefighting personnel.
Prevent the fire.
Know your equipment.
Use it correctly.
Act early and evacuate when necessary.
