A pair of gloves may look protective, but the wrong glove can create a false sense of security. Every task has different hazards, so hand protection must be selected according to the actual job, exposure, working conditions and required level of protection. OSHA specifically requires appropriate hand protection where workers are exposed to hazards such as cuts, abrasions, punctures, chemical burns, thermal burns and harmful temperature extremes.
πΉ CUT-RESISTANT GLOVES πͺ
Suitable for tasks involving sharp edges, sheet metal, blades and material handling. Always select the required cut-performance level for the actual task.
πΉ CHEMICAL-RESISTANT GLOVES π§ͺ
Do not select gloves simply because they are labelled “chemical resistant.” Check the specific chemical, concentration, contact type, breakthrough information and manufacturer compatibility data.
πΉ HEAT / THERMAL PROTECTION π₯
Select gloves according to the actual temperature, heat source, duration of exposure and task. Welding, hot-surface handling and foundry work may require different levels of protection.
πΉ ELECTRICAL INSULATING GLOVES ⚡
Electrical work requires properly rated and tested insulating equipment appropriate to the electrical hazard. Ordinary work gloves must never be treated as electrical protection. OSHA addresses electrical protective equipment separately under 29 CFR 1910.137.
πΉ COLD-RESISTANT GLOVES ❄️
Choose protection based on the actual cold exposure, working conditions and manufacturer performance information.
πΉ LEATHER / GENERAL WORK GLOVES π§€
Useful for suitable handling, abrasion and general mechanical tasks—but they do not automatically provide protection against chemicals, electrical hazards, severe cuts or high temperatures.
πΉ COTTON / FABRIC GLOVES
Generally intended for light-duty handling and similar low-hazard tasks. They should not be assumed to protect against sharp objects, chemicals, heat or electrical hazards.
π BEFORE USING YOUR GLOVES
✅ Inspect for holes, cuts, tears and damage
✅ Check correct size, fit and required dexterity
✅ Confirm the glove is suitable for the identified hazard
✅ Check manufacturer instructions and limitations
✅ Verify chemical compatibility where applicable
✅ Replace defective, damaged or contaminated gloves
✅ Store and maintain gloves as recommended
π« COMMON MISTAKES
❌ Using the same glove for every task
❌ Using damaged or contaminated gloves
❌ Ignoring chemical compatibility
❌ Wearing loose-fitting gloves around rotating equipment
❌ Assuming thicker gloves always mean better protection
❌ Assuming gloves eliminate the need for other controls
⚠️ IMPORTANT: PPE is one part of risk control. Hazards should first be assessed and, where possible, controlled through engineering and work-practice controls. PPE should be selected based on the workplace hazard assessment.
