π¦Ί PPE STANDARDS – KNOW THE MARKING, KNOW THE PROTECTION WITH HSE Trainer π‘️
π·♂️ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should never be selected just because it “looks safe.”
The PPE must be suitable for the hazard, correctly rated, properly fitted, inspected and maintained before use.

πΉ Why PPE Standards Matter?
A helmet, safety shoe, glove, safety eyewear or harness is designed to provide protection against specific hazards and conditions. The markings and certification information help us understand what protection the equipment was designed and tested to provide.
πͺ 1. HEAD PROTECTION
Protects against hazards such as: • Falling or flying objects
• Impact from workplace activities
• Certain electrical risks, where the helmet is specifically rated for them
✅ Check the helmet condition, suspension, shell and markings before use.
π₯½ 2. EYE & FACE PROTECTION
Required where workers may be exposed to: • Flying particles
• Dust
• Chemical splashes
• Grinding/cutting operations
• Other eye or face hazards
✅ Select protection according to the actual hazard—not simply based on appearance.
𧀠3. HAND PROTECTION
Different gloves provide different levels of protection against: • Cuts
• Abrasion
• Mechanical hazards
• Chemicals
• Heat or other task-specific hazards
⚠️ One glove does NOT protect against every hazard.
π₯Ύ 4. FOOT PROTECTION
Safety footwear can help protect against: • Falling objects
• Crushing hazards
• Punctures
• Slips and other workplace risks
✅ Check the sole, toe protection, upper material and overall condition regularly.
π· 5. RESPIRATORY PROTECTION
Respiratory protection may be required against: • Dust
• Fumes
• Mists
• Vapours
• Other airborne contaminants
⚠️ The respirator must be appropriate for the contaminant and properly fitted.
π§ 6. FALL PROTECTION
Where there is a risk of falling from height, suitable fall-protection equipment may be required.
✅ Inspect harnesses, lanyards, connectors and anchorage systems before use.
❌ Never use damaged or questionable fall-arrest equipment.

π BEFORE YOU WEAR PPE — REMEMBER 5 CHECKS
1️⃣ IDENTIFY – What is the hazard?
2️⃣ SELECT – What PPE is suitable?
3️⃣ VERIFY – Check the marking, rating and manufacturer information.
4️⃣ INSPECT – Look for damage, wear or defects.
5️⃣ USE CORRECTLY – Wear, adjust and maintain it as instructed.
π¨ IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE
PPE is not the first choice in the hierarchy of controls. Where possible, hazards should first be eliminated or controlled through engineering and administrative measures. PPE is an important last line of defence when residual risk remains.
π‘ Don't ask: “Do I have PPE?”
Ask instead: “Do I have the RIGHT PPE for this hazard?”
