Fire is one of the most common workplace hazards, but it can also be one of the most preventable. Every fire requires three essential elements to start and continue burning: Heat, Fuel, and Oxygen. These three elements are known as the Fire Triangle.


If any one of these elements is removed, the fire will be extinguished or prevented from starting. Understanding this simple principle helps workers recognize hazards, select the correct firefighting method, and prevent serious accidents.


🔺 The Three Elements of the Fire Triangle


🔥 1. Heat Heat raises the temperature of a fuel until it reaches its ignition point.


Common Heat Sources: • Welding and cutting operations • Grinding and friction • Electrical faults and short circuits • Open flames • Hot surfaces and engines • Static electricity • Chemical reactions • Direct sunlight (concentrated)

⛽ 2. Fuel Fuel is any combustible material capable of burning.


Examples: • Solid: Wood, paper, cardboard, plastic, rubber, cloth, coal • Liquid: Petrol, diesel, kerosene, paint, solvents, oils • Gas: LPG, CNG, Hydrogen, Acetylene, Natural Gas

💨 3. Oxygen Oxygen supports combustion. Air contains approximately 21% oxygen, which is sufficient to sustain most fires.

🛑 How to Stop a Fire


✅ Remove Heat


Cool the burning material below its ignition temperature.


Apply water where appropriate.


Isolate heat sources.


Stop heat transfer.


✅ Remove Fuel


Shut off fuel supply.


Remove combustible materials.


Clean up spills immediately.


Maintain excellent housekeeping.


Store flammable materials correctly.


✅ Remove Oxygen


Smother the fire using foam, CO₂, fire blanket, or sand.


Close doors and ventilation where safe.


Use inert gas systems in industrial applications.
