A SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT IMPROVE IS A SYSTEM WAITING TO FAIL! ⚠️

A SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT IMPROVE IS A SYSTEM WAITING TO FAIL! ⚠️

Have you ever wondered why some organisations experience repeated accidents despite having safety policies, procedures and trained personnel?

The answer may lie in their failure to practise CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT.

One of the most important principles of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 is the PDCA Cycle.

🔵 1. PLAN – Identify hazards, assess risks, establish objectives and determine the necessary controls and resources.

🟢 2. DO – Implement the controls, train workers, communicate procedures and execute safe work practices.

🟠 3. CHECK – Conduct inspections, audits, monitor performance, investigate incidents and evaluate safety KPIs.

🟣 4. ACT – Correct root causes, implement corrective actions, learn lessons and improve the management system.

But there is something else every HSE professional must understand:

DON'T JUST MEASURE ACCIDENTS. MEASURE PREVENTION!

There are two important performance indicators:

LEADING INDICATORS (BEFORE AN INCIDENT)

Property damage.

Environmental incidents.

Days lost due to accidents.

Remember:

A workplace recording ZERO accidents is not necessarily a safe workplace.

Sometimes, the warning signs are present, but nobody is measuring them.

A strong safety culture does not wait for an accident before taking action. It identifies weaknesses, learns continuously and prevents recurrence.

🔥 YOUR TURN:

Which of these four stages do you think organisations neglect the most?

PLAN

DO

CHECK

ACT
