This poster puts two workplace systems side by side, and they work best when you use them together.
6S: A Clean, Organized and Productive Workplace
6S builds on the original 5S method by adding Safety as the 6th S. It is more about the habits and system you follow every day.
| Step | Name | What it means in practice
| 1 | Sort (Seiri) | Remove what is not needed
| 2 | Set in Order (Seiton) | Arrange needed items for easy access
| 3 | Shine (Seiso) | Clean your workplace regularly
| 4 | Standardize (Seiketsu) | Establish clear standards and procedures
| 5 | Sustain (Shitsuke) | Keep it going through discipline and training
| 6 | Safety (Anzen) | Ensure a safe workplace for everyone
The key idea with 6S is that safety is not a separate checklist. If a walkway is blocked, a tool is left on the floor, or a chemical is stored wrong, that is both a housekeeping failure and a safety failure.
5Z: A Leaner, More Efficient Workplace
5Z is more about the targets you are aiming for. Instead of steps, each Z is a “zero” you want to reach.
| Step | Name | What it means in practice
| 1Z | Zero Unnecessary Things | Remove items that are not needed
| 2Z | Zero Disorder | Keep things well arranged and in place
| 3Z | Zero Dust | Keep the workplace clean and free from dust
| 4Z | Zero Defects | Prevent and eliminate defects and rework
| 5Z | Zero Delay | Make things happen on time and avoid delays
Notice the overlap. The first three Zs line up closely with Sort, Set in Order, and Shine. The last two go further, into quality and time. A tidy bench means little if the work still comes out wrong or late.
How they fit together
Think of it like this:
6S is the method: sort it, arrange it, clean it, standardize it, sustain it, and do it safely.
5Z is the result you check: did we end up with zero clutter, zero disorder, zero dust, zero defects, and zero delay?
If you are doing 6S well, you should start seeing the 5Z results. If you are still seeing defects or delays, it usually means one of the 6S steps has slipped, often Sustain.
Why it matters
The poster lists four main benefits, and they connect directly:
Cleaner and safer workplace: hazards get spotted early because everything has a place and is visible
Higher productivity and efficiency: less time searching, waiting, or redoing work
Reduced waste and cost: less damage, less rework, less unused material sitting around
Improved morale and discipline: people work better in a place that is ordered and cared for
That is why it ends with: Keep it Clean, Keep it Safe, Keep it Lean!
Clean covers the daily tidying, Safe covers the 6th S, and Lean covers the 5Z focus on cutting waste, defects, and delays. 🚧🚨🚥⛑️⚠️🏗️🌡️🚦🦺🗼
