Clean Development Mechanism
The Government of India has set up a National Clean Development
Mechanism Authority (NCDMA) in December 2003, with the Secretary
(Environment & Forests) as Chairman.. The Authority considers
various Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects for the grant of Host
Country Approval (HCA) from sustainable development point of view.
India’s CDM potential represents a significant component of the global
CDM market. As on August 28, 2012, out of total 4,527 projects
registered by the CDM Executive Board, 878 are from India, which so far
is the second highest by any country in the world. Under the CDM
modalities and procedure, projects with Official Development Assistance
(ODA) are not eligible for CDM benefits. As on date, India has accorded
Host Country Approval to 2423 projects facilitating an investment of
more than Rs. 440,895 crores. If all these projects get registered by
the CDM Executive Board, they have the potential to generate 716 million
Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) by the end of the year 2012.
