'Indians can play vital role to protect nature environment'
PUNE: Polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan on Monday said that Indians can play a vital role in protection and conservation of the environment.
Swan said that recycling has become a keyword in preserving the environment and it was the responsibility of every citizen to protect the planet by following environment-friendly ways which would help the future generations. Children should encourage recycling and use of recycled products, said Swan, who is the first person to walk to the South and North Pole.
He was addressing students at the Deccan Education Society's DES school at a TRASH festival. The event was supported by The Energy and Research Institute ( TERI) and Tetra Pak India. Swan said children should have a dream and try hard to achieve it.
He also said, "People need to find workable solutions pertaining to management of garbage and citizens here should take the processing of garbage as a challenge. Teachers should take up the responsibility of teaching children the basics of how to protect the environment and maintain cleanliness."
Narrating his experience of the expeditions to the North and South Pole, Swan said, "I had a dream since my childhood to walk to both the poles. After my visits there, I realized that climate change is harming both the poles. We need to act to save Antarctica and the North Pole."
Swan pointed out that India has ample sunlight which should be used to generate power. Use of natural power has become a necessity now and people should make efforts to make solar energy an alternative to other energy sources, he added.
