India has several initiatives to produce green ammonia, including:

National Green Hydrogen Mission

Launched in 2021, this mission aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030. The mission includes:

SIGHT Programme: A component of the mission that incentivizes green ammonia production for the fertilizer sector

Demand creation: The government will specify a minimum share of green hydrogen consumption by designated consumers

Supply-side interventions: Incentive frameworks to address production and distribution constraints

Building an enabling ecosystem: Supporting development and scaling through infrastructure and technological advancements

Strategic Hydrogen Innovation Partnership (SHIP): A public-private partnership framework for R&D

Green ammonia platform

A platform that aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030. Stakeholders include Greenko, AM Green, Petronas, and GIC.

SECI's green ammonia initiative

A plan led by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to produce 539,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia each year. The procurement will be distributed across eleven projects.

Green ammonia is produced by using power from renewable energy. It can be used in fertilizer production to lower the carbon footprint of agricultural practices. India's initiatives to produce green ammonia are a step towards: Reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, and Meeting international commitments for clean energy.
