India's Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has developed advanced thorium-based nuclear reactor technology, including the Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR), designed to generate over 60% of its power from thorium. These small, innovative reactors can operate for up to 14 years using just 200 grams of thorium, potentially supplying electricity to an entire district. Featuring passive safety systems for deployment near population centers, thorium reactors produce less long-lived waste, operate at lower pressures, and support India's three-stage nuclear program aimed at harnessing its vast thorium reserves for sustainable, long-term energy generation.
