Definition: Nekton is the term that refers to the
"swimmers," the animals in the ocean that can move independently of
ocean currents, by swimming or using another form of locomotion. This
means that, unlike plankton, they are capable of determining their location in the ocean.
Examples:
Basking sharks and humpback whales are examples of nekton, as both swim using their tails for propulsion and can determine their direction.
