India has made significant progress in green hydrogen production and use, including:
Production
India's first 99% pure green hydrogen plant was commissioned in Jorhat, Assam. The country has also launched demonstration pilot plants to produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis, biomass oxy steam gasification, and CBG reforming.
Blending
GAIL Limited and NTPC Limited have started blending hydrogen into city gas distribution grids. NTPC Limited is blending up to 8% green hydrogen into the PNG network in Surat, Gujarat.
Transportation
The Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas launched India's first green hydrogen fuel cell bus in New Delhi. NTPC Limited has also launched hydrogen-based fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) buses in Leh and Greater Noida.
Mission
The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to increase green hydrogen production to 5 million metric tonnes per year by 2030. The mission also seeks to reduce fossil fuel imports and greenhouse gas emissions.
Standards
The government has started establishing regulations and standards to support the growth of the green hydrogen sector.
Certification
The Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India ensures that producers meet data quality requirements and adhere to the Green Hydrogen MRV framework.
Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydropower. It can replace fossil fuels in transportation and industry, and it can be produced locally to reduce imports.
