The vision of COP29, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is to develop a shared plan to limit global warming and help developing countries adapt to climate change:
Set a new climate finance goal: Replace the $100 billion pledge set in 2009, which many say is insufficient
Ensure countries have the means to take stronger climate action: Countries are developing national climate plans (NDCs) that are economy-wide, focus on transitioning away from fossil fuels, and keep the world on track to 1.5 degrees of warming
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions: Use finance to reduce emissions
Build resilient communities: Adapt to the impacts of climate change
Enhance ambition: Ensure all parties commit to ambitious national plans and transparency
Enable action: Use finance to address loss and damage
Resolve rules for carbon market: Set rules for trading carbon credits earned through the preservation of forests and other natural carbon sinks
COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11–22, 2024. Delegates from about 200 countries, business leaders, climate scientists, Indigenous Peoples, journalists, and various other experts and stakeholders are expected to attend.
