AP plans to host global summit on energy efficiency

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh is planning to host a global summit on energy efficiency in collaboration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to showcase its progress in this domain and expand its international reach.

During a meeting with representatives from the BEE, chief secretary K Vijayanand urged BEE and ministry of power to provide financial support for MSMEs to adopt energy-efficient technologies. This support would include investment-grade energy audits, detailed project reports, and advanced monitoring mechanisms. He also called for targeted support for the fisheries sector in West Godavari, as well as for the glass and refractory industries in both East and West Godavari districts, to adopt cutting-edge energy-efficient technologies.

BEE media advisor (South) A Chandra Sekhara Reddy and APSECM CEO B A V Kumar Reddy met the chief secretary. During the meeting, Vijayanand explained the state govt's commitment to a phased rollout of Union govt's Mission LiFE (LiFEStyle for Environment). "The objective of the state is to provide 24/7 power supply meeting global standards, creating a conducive atmosphere for attracting investment and industrial development. To achieve this, chief minister N Chandrababu has set a time-bound target for power projects, particularly in renewable energy and energy-efficient initiatives," the chief secretary said.

The Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM), the state-designated agency, has identified key sectors for priority action, including transport, industry, buildings, agriculture, and fisheries. These sectors, particularly MSMEs, present opportunities for significant energy savings, economic growth, and job creation.

Projections estimate that energy efficiency measures in these sectors could reduce energy consumption by 2.85 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in a moderate scenario and 3.88 Mtoe in an ambitious scenario by 2031. Correspondingly, carbon dioxide emissions could decrease by 8 million tonnes (MtCO2) and 12 MtCO2, respectively.

The chief secretary, who released a report on Mission LiFE submitted by the BEE media advisor, also highlighted the critical role of MSMEs in economic growth and employment. "To amplify its impact, we will brief the chief minister and the energy minister about the energy department's plans to host a global summit on Mission LiFE and energy efficiency, in partnership with BEE, EESL, and the ministry of power. Its proactive initiatives aim to ensure a cleaner environment, a better quality of life, and a sustainable future for generations to come," added Vijayanand.
