Fire safety Day-week-Month celebration training session topic on Work at height -Given by Shri Saroj Dash.
The Fall Protection Pyramid | Rigid LifelinesFall protection involves systems to stop a fall in progress (active/PPE), while fall prevention focuses on eliminating risks before they happen (passive/barriers). Common causes include unprotected edges, improper ladder use, and unstable surfaces. Key methods include guardrails, scaffolding, and PPE (harnesses) to prevent fatalities.
Fall Prevention vs. Fall Protection
Fall Prevention (Passive): Keeps workers on stable ground using physical barriers like guardrails, toeboards, and net systems.
Fall Protection (Active/PPE): Equipment designed to stop a fall or reduce injuries, such as full-body harnesses, lanyards, and lifelines.
Common Causes & Prevention (Cause/Cure)
Unprotected Edges/Holes: Use guardrails (42 inches high) and floor covers.
Improper Ladder Usage: Use the 4:1 rule (1-foot out for every 4-feet up), secure top and bottom, and maintain three points of contact.
Scaffolding Failures: Ensure scaffolding is erected by professionals, has safe access (ladders), and has top/mid-rails.
Slippery/Cluttered Surfaces: Housekeeping is key; keep walkways clear and dry.
Identifying Falling Object Hazards
Falling objects cause injuries from tools, materials, or debris dropped from height.
Hazards: Unsecured tools, debris on platforms, missing toe boards.
Control Measures: Install toe boards, mesh, or netting on scaffolds; use tool lanyards; create barricaded "drop zones" below work areas.
Hierarchy of Hazard Control
Elimination: Redesign work to avoid height (e.g., using drones for inspection).
Substitution: Use tools with extension poles from the ground.
Engineering Controls: Guardrails, hole covers, and scaffolding.
Administrative Controls: Training, signage, and scheduling.
PPE: Full-body harness and lanyard systems.
Specific Equipment & Activities
Elevated Platform/Scaffolding: Must have railings and be secured. Mobile platforms (MEWPs) must be on flat surfaces.
Extension Ladder Safety: Extend ladder 3 feet above landing; secure top/bottom.
Fall Prevention Activity: Routine inspections of equipment, employee training on rescue plans, and risk assessments.
