PRINCIPLES OF PUTTING OUT A FIRE
The principle of putting
out a fire is to break the fire triangle by separating any of its vital
constituents viz heat, fuel or Oxygen. This is done by
Removing
heat or Cooling
Removing
Fuel or Starvation
Removing
Oxygen or Smothering
Removing heat or Cooling
Cooling by water is the
most effective method of removing heat and best used on burning solids. This
cooling is done by the use of extinguishers containing water
Removing Fuel or Starvation
Extinguishing the fire by
removing the burning fuel in the vicinity of fire is called Starvation method.
In hut fire spreading of fire is chocked by removing the thatched roof.
Removing Oxygen or Smothering
Dry powder, Carbon dioxide
extinguishers work by smothering, by driving away Oxygen containing air from
the vicinity of Fuel and replacing it with CO2, dry powder or by
vaporising liquids called halogens interfering with chemical reactions of the
flame
