How to Lubricate
1. Fill the Oil Reservoir:
Chainsaws have a separate reservoir for bar and chain oil, which should be filled according to the manufacturer's instructions.
2. Use the Correct Oil:
Always use a dedicated bar and chain oil, not regular engine oil or vegetable oil, as these are not formulated to withstand the heat and friction of a chainsaw.
3. Check the Lubrication System:
Start the chainsaw with the chain brake off.
Rev the engine a few inches from a piece of cardboard or a tree trunk.
A visible spray of oil on the surface indicates that the lubrication system is working correctly.
When to Lubricate
Before Use:
A new or newly sharpened chain should be saturated with oil by placing it in a bag with bar oil and letting it soak, according to YouTube.
Regularly During Use:
The chainsaw's oiler system automatically feeds oil to the chain while you are cutting.
As Needed:
If the chainsaw begins to run hotter or if you notice increased friction, it's a sign that you need to check your oil level.
