 To respond to a chemical spill in a battery room, immediately ensure personal safety by moving to fresh air and seeking medical attention if exposed. Then, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), contain the spill with absorbent materials designed for battery acid, and neutralize and clean the area according to the manufacturer's instructions and local regulations. Crucially, ensure the room has adequate ventilation to prevent the buildup of flammable hydrogen gas and that no ignition sources are present.  

Before a Spill (Prevention & Preparedness)

1. Maintain Ventilation:

Ensure the battery room has adequate ventilation to prevent the accumulation of hydrogen gas, which is highly flammable and a common byproduct of battery charging. 

2. Implement Proper Housekeeping:

Keep the area clean and organized to reduce tripping hazards and facilitate spill response. 

3. Use Appropriate PPE:

Always have and wear the correct PPE, including safety goggles or a face shield, rubber or PVC gloves, and acid-resistant clothing and boots when working with batteries. 

4. Verify Safety Equipment:

Ensure that an eyewash station and safety shower are nearby, functional, and have a clear path to them. 

5. Eliminate Ignition Sources:

Keep metal tools away from batteries to prevent arcs, and do not smoke or use open flames in the room. 

During a Spill

1. Prioritize Personal Safety:

If you are in direct contact with the spilled chemical, move to a well-ventilated area immediately. 

2. Administer First Aid:

Inhalation: Seek immediate medical attention. 

Eye Contact: Wash eyes with water for at least 15 minutes; do not rub, and seek immediate medical attention. 

Skin Contact: Wash the affected area immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention. 

3. Evacuate and Ventilate:

Leave the area and make sure ventilation is active to disperse gases. 

4. Use Spill Kits:

Use absorbent pads, pillows, or other specialized materials to contain and absorb the spill. 

5. Neutralize and Clean:

Use acid-neutralizing pads designed for battery acid if applicable, and then carefully clean any remaining residue. 

6. Proper Disposal:

Place all contaminated materials into a clearly labeled chemical waste container and dispose of them according to all local regulations.
