Lockout-Tagout (LOTO): Control Energy, Save Lives

Message:

Many workplace accidents happen when machines are serviced or repaired without isolating their energy sources. Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) is the system that keeps workers safe.

✅ What is LOTO?

A safety procedure used to isolate energy sources and prevent unexpected start-up of machines or release of stored energy.

🔹 Types of Energy to Control:

Electrical ⚡

Mechanical ⚙️

Hydraulic 💧

Pneumatic 💨

Chemical ☣️

Thermal đŸ”Ĩ

🔹 LOTO Steps:

Prepare for shutdown – Identify all energy sources.

Shut down equipment – Turn off the machine.

Isolate energy – Switch off breakers, valves, or disconnects.

Apply Lock & Tag – Lock devices and attach warning tags with worker’s name.

Release stored energy – Bleed, drain, or discharge any residual power.

Verify isolation – Test to confirm equipment cannot start.

Perform work safely.

Tip: Only the worker who placed the lock and tag should remove it — this ensures accountability and safety.
