Earth Day Network - India
India has emerged as a decisive environmental, social,
economic and political power. Earth Day Network is engaging with
partners to build and enhance the region’s civic mobilization and
leadership in the environmental movement.
Building on the success of its 40th Anniversary Earth Day campaign, Earth Day Network has launched a permanent India Program, head- quartered in Kolkata, India. Projects in India focus on :
• Environmental Education
• Women & The Green Economy (WAGETM)
• Capacity Building & Training
• Earth Day — India
Karuna Singh, Earth Day Network's India country director has over 20 years of experience at the State Department's US Consulate at Kolkata with a major portfolio on environmental affairs.
For Earth Day 2011 in India, events were organized in 170
cities and districts in each of the 29 states. Several thousand Indians
participated, a majority of whom pledged an act of green to help reduce
carbon emission and promote sustainability, energizing the “new” global
environmental movement.Building on the success of its 40th Anniversary Earth Day campaign, Earth Day Network has launched a permanent India Program, head- quartered in Kolkata, India. Projects in India focus on :

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Education is the key component of any environmental initiative, as it provides for sustainability and prepares future generations of global citizens. We are helping teachers incorporate those elements into their classroom through online resources, curriculum and activities that engage the entire community.
WOMEN & GREEN ECONOMY
Women in India are now in top positions in government, business and non-governmental organizations. Earth Day Network – India is creating a cadre of women leaders to join a network of peers around the world that are creating a policy platform to promote women's role in accelerating a transition to a green economy. These findings will be presented at the United Nations Earth Summit in 2012.
CAPACITY BUILDING & TRAINING
Using the ‘train-the-trainer’ model for developing vital skills and abilities, Earth Day Network will empower non-governmental organizations and educators to advocate for and protect the environment. We are also building a network of environmentally-active youth through our Civic Education Program, which supports teachers as they implement green school and community-based environmental projects.
EARTH DAY - INDIA
Every April 22, Earth Day provides a tremendous opportunity to engage all levels of civil society in the environmental movement. The 41st anniversary of Earth Day in 2011 was observed in cities around India, including New Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai through commemorative Mother Earth concerts, community service, and tree-planting projects. Earth Day 2012 in India aims to activate over a million people to participate in local, regional and country-wide projects.
