The CPCB plans and executes nationwide programs to prevent, control, and abate water and air pollution.
Providing technical assistance
The CPCB provides technical assistance and guidance to state pollution control boards.
Research and investigations
The CPCB carries out and sponsors research and investigations related to water and air pollution.
Collecting and publishing data
The CPCB collects, compiles, and publishes technical and statistical data related to water pollution.
Setting standards
The CPCB lays down and annuls standards for the quality of water in streams and wells.
Training
The CPCB plans and organizes training for people involved in water and air pollution prevention, control, and abatement.
Monitoring
The CPCB monitors water and air quality, and maintains monitoring data.
Working with industries
The CPCB works with industries and all levels of government in voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts.
The CPCB was created under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. It has its head office in New Delhi, with nine regional directorates and one project office.
