Forest cover

India's forest cover has increased from 19.43% in 1989 to 21.54% in 2017. The North-East region of India accounts for almost a quarter of the country's forest cover. 

Forest types

India has 16 forest type groups, which are further divided into 200 types. 

Biodiversity

India has some of the world's most biodiverse ecozones, including tropical and temperate forests, deserts, grasslands, and more. 

Challenges

The forestry sector faces challenges such as illegal logging, forest fires, illegal grazing, and encroachment on forest lands. 

Government initiatives

The government has implemented policies and programs to conserve the environment, natural resources, and wildlife. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) is the nodal agency for planning, promoting, and overseeing the implementation of these policies. 

Legislation

The Indian Forest Act, 1927, Wildlife Protection Act 1972, and Forest Conservation Act, 1980 are some of the laws that protect forests and wildlife. 

National Environment Tribunal

Established in 1995, the National Environment Tribunal provides for strict liability for damage caused by accidents involving hazardous substances.
