Early environmental debates

Environmental issues were first discussed in national politics during Indira Gandhi's first term as Prime Minister.

1980

A federal Department of Environment was created.

1985

The Department of Environment was renamed the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

2014

The ministry was renamed to the current title of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, raising the priority of climate change.

2008

The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) was launched, with most ministries and departments working together to achieve its goals.

Climate Change Division

The Climate Change Division is responsible for climate change issues, including international negotiations, domestic policies, and actions.

The MoEF&CC's work is guided by a set of legislative and regulatory measures, including the National Forest Policy, 1988, the Indian Forest Act, 1927, and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
