The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in India has a long history of working to protect the environment and climate:
Early environmental debates
Environmental issues were first discussed in national politics during Indira Gandhi's first term as Prime Minister.
1977
Article 48A was added to the constitution, giving the central government the power to protect the environment, forests, and wildlife.
1980
A federal Department of Environment was created.
1985
The Department of Environment was renamed the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
2014
The ministry was renamed to the current title of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, raising the priority of climate change.
2008
The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) was launched, with most ministries and departments working together to achieve its goals.
Climate Change Division
The Climate Change Division is responsible for climate change issues, including international negotiations, domestic policies, and actions.
The MoEF&CC's work is guided by a set of legislative and regulatory measures, including the National Forest Policy, 1988, the Indian Forest Act, 1927, and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
