Section 14 of the Factories Act of 1948 covers dust and fumes in factories:
Prevent inhalation and accumulation
Measures must be taken to prevent dust, fumes, and other impurities from being inhaled or accumulating in workrooms.
Exhaust appliances
Exhaust appliances should be used as close as possible to the source of the dust, fumes, or other impurities.
Enclose the source
The source of the dust, fumes, or other impurities should be enclosed as far as possible.
Internal combustion engines
Stationary internal combustion engines can only be operated if the exhaust is conducted into the open air. Other internal combustion engines can only be operated in a room if effective measures are taken to prevent fumes from accumulating.
The Factories Act also includes provisions for:
Shelters, restrooms, and lunch rooms
Increasing the minimum age for children to work
Reducing the number of hours a child can work
Preventing children from working between certain hours
Health, safety, and welfare provisions for apprentices
