Microbial fouling of resin occurs when bacteria and other microorganisms grow on ion exchange resins. This can happen when the resin is exposed to organic material from water or from the resin itself.
Causes
Organic material: Bacteria can grow on organic material from water or from the resin itself.
Suspended solids: Particles like silica, iron, and manganese can accumulate on the resin.
Oils and greases: These can accumulate on the resin.
Signs
The resin requires more rinsing
The resin is more sensitive to temperature and flow rate changes
The effluent quality and operating capacity decrease faster than expected
Prevention Regularly clean the resin with regenerant, Increase the frequency of regeneration, and Increase the temperature of regeneration.
Treatment
Use a 0.1% peracetic acid solution in water for one hour
Rinse the resin shortly after using peracetic acid
Add silver to suppress bacterial growth
