Thoroughfare regeneration is a method for regenerating ion exchange resins that uses a weak resin followed by a strong resin. The weak resin has a high capacity and good regeneration efficiency, but it doesn't remove all ions. The strong resin removes any remaining ions, but it's less efficient.
Steps
Backwash: Remove dirt and debris from the resin bed
Introduce regenerant: Add the correct concentration of regenerant to the tanks to reactivate the resin
Pass regenerant through strong resin: The strong resin requires a large excess of regenerant
Regenerate weak resin: Use the excess regenerant from the strong resin to regenerate the weak resin
Rinse: Rinse the resin bed with water to remove any residual regenerant
Purpose
The regeneration process removes ions that the resin has picked up during use, so that the resin can be used again.
