Engineering controls = you fix the hazard at the source by design, not by behaviour. They sit at #3 in the Hierarchy of Controls (after Elimination & Substitution) and are far more reliable than admin controls or PPE.

Engineering controls = you fix the hazard at the source by design, not by behaviour. They sit at #3 in the Hierarchy of Controls (after Elimination & Substitution) and are far more reliable than admin controls or PPE.

1. Isolation / Enclosure
Separating worker from hazard.
Examples: Enclosing noisy generators, glove boxes for chemicals, sealed control rooms.

2. Ventilation Systems
Removing airborne contaminants at source or diluting them.
Examples: LEV - Local Exhaust Ventilation, fume hoods, dust extraction systems, exhaust fans.

3. Automation & Remote Operation
Removing the worker from the hazardous zone entirely.
Examples: Robotic handling of acids, remote-controlled valves, automated welding.

4. Machine Guarding & Barriers
Physical barriers to prevent contact.
Examples: Interlocked guards, light curtains, safety barriers, two-hand controls.

5. Redesign / Modification
Changing the equipment or process to be inherently safer.
Examples: Ergonomic tool redesign, water-based paints instead of solvent-based, low-noise equipment.

6. Noise & Vibration Control
Engineering the energy out.
Examples: Acoustic enclosures, silencers/mufflers, dampers, anti-vibration mounts.

Key Benefit: They eliminate or reduce hazards by modifying process, equipment, or environment — no need to rely on worker compliance. ⛑️📝🚨🚥🏗️🚧🎯⚠️✅💯🦺
