Risk assessment is a systematic process of identifying hazards, evaluating the level of risk, and selecting appropriate controls to prevent injury, illness, property damage, environmental harm, or other losses.
🔎 1. Identify the Hazards
Look for anything that could cause harm:
Working at height
Electricity
Moving machinery
Chemicals
Fire
Slips, trips and falls
Lifting operations
Confined spaces
📊 2. Assess the Risk
Consider two key factors:
Risk = Likelihood × Severity
Likelihood: How likely is the incident to happen?
Severity: How serious could the consequence be?
Example:
Wet floor → Slip and fall → Possible likelihood + Major injury = High Risk
🛡️ 3. Select Control Measures
Follow the Hierarchy of Controls:
1. Eliminate – remove the hazard
2. Substitute – replace it with something safer
3. Engineering controls – isolate people from the hazard
4. Administrative controls – procedures, training, signs, supervision
5. PPE – protect the worker as the last line of defence
⚙️ 4. Implement the Controls
Make sure the selected controls are actually put in place before the work begins.
🔄 5. Review and Monitor
Risk assessment is not a one-time exercise. Review it when:
The job or process changes
New hazards appear
An incident or near miss occurs
Equipment or materials change
Controls are found to be ineffective
