Calcium begins its journey when it becomes available as Ca²⁺ in soil water. Healthy roots absorb it, and the xylem carries it upward with the flow of water through the plant.
Calcium supports cell walls, cell membranes and the growth of new tissues. Because it is not readily redistributed to growing parts, developing leaves and fruits may show calcium-related disorders even when calcium is present in the soil. Consistent root-zone moisture and healthy roots therefore matter alongside calcium supply.
