Not all fires should be fought with the same extinguisher. Choosing the wrong type can make a fire more dangerous. Knowing the fire class is an essential part of shipboard safety.

🟢 CLASS A — Ordinary Combustibles

Wood, paper, cloth, and similar materials.

🔴 CLASS B — Flammable Liquids

Fuel, oil, paint, and other flammable liquids.

🟡 CLASS D — Combustible Metals

Certain metal fires require specialized extinguishing agents.

⚫ CLASS K — Cooking Oils & Fats

Commonly associated with galley cooking-oil fires.

🔵 CLASS C — Energized Electrical Equipment

Electrical panels, wiring, outlets, and other energized equipment.

⚓ MARINE SAFETY REMINDER:

Before using an extinguisher, identify the fire class, use the correct extinguisher, raise the alarm, and follow your vessel’s emergency procedures. For electrical fires, remember that the equipment may remain energized until properly isolated.
