🔥 HOT WORK FIRE SAFETY
RIGHT EXTINGUISHER. RIGHT LOCATION. READY TO USE.
Hot work is high risk. One spark can start a fire—even hours after the job is completed.
🔥 1. WHAT IS HOT WORK?
Hot work includes any activity that generates heat, sparks, or open flames:
- Welding
- Cutting
- Grinding
- Brazing
- Soldering
- Open-flame operations
⚠️ Remember: Sparks can travel, ignite hidden combustibles, and cause delayed fires.
🧯 2. WHY ARE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ESSENTIAL?
✔️ Control incipient-stage fires when safe to do so.
✔️ Protect people, property, and equipment.
✔️ Support emergency response.
✔️ Meet applicable HSE requirements and hot work permit conditions.
Never start hot work without the required fire protection measures in place.
🚨 3. KEY HSE REQUIREMENTS
✅ Correct Type: Select an extinguisher suitable for the anticipated fire risk.
✅ Adequate Provision: Provide the number, capacity, and distribution required by the site risk assessment, hot work permit, and applicable standards.
✅ Ready for Use: Check the pressure indicator where fitted, safety pin, tamper seal, hose, body condition, and inspection/service status.
✅ Accessible & Visible: Keep extinguishers unobstructed and immediately accessible.
✅ Fire Watch: Assign a competent fire watch where required, and maintain post-work monitoring for the period specified by the permit and applicable requirements.
Important: Two extinguishers and a 5–10 m placement distance may be site-specific rules, not universal OSHA or NFPA requirements. Follow the applicable standard and approved site procedure.
🧯 4. KNOW YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
💧 WATER — CLASS A
For ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and textiles.
⚠️ Never use on energized electrical equipment or flammable-liquid fires.
🫧 FOAM — CLASS A & B
For suitable solid-material and flammable-liquid fires.
⚠️ Check the manufacturer's rating and electrical-use restrictions.
⚙️ DRY CHEMICAL POWDER — DEPENDS ON RATING
Suitable for the fire classes indicated on the extinguisher label. Some types cover Class A, B, and C hazards.
⚠️ Powder residue may damage equipment and reduce visibility.
❄️ CO₂ — COMMONLY CLASS B & ELECTRICAL
Useful for certain flammable-liquid and energized electrical-equipment fires.
⚠️ Provides limited cooling and may be hazardous in confined spaces.
🧪 WET CHEMICAL — CLASS K / CLASS F, DEPENDING ON STANDARD
Designed primarily for cooking oils and fats in commercial kitchens.
Know your local fire-class system: Class C means gases in some standards, while Class C refers to energized electrical equipment in the US system. Class K is used in the US; Class F is used in several other systems.
📍 5. EXTINGUISHER PLACEMENT
📌 Position extinguishers where they can be reached quickly without entering the spark or fire zone.
📌 Keep them visible, clearly identified, and unobstructed.
📌 Protect them from excessive heat, sparks, physical damage, and unsuitable weather exposure.
📌 Ensure the location and travel distance meet the applicable site requirements.
📌 Provide additional protection where the risk assessment identifies the need.
✅ 6. PRE-START HOT WORK CHECKLIST
☑️ Correct extinguisher type and capacity available.
☑️ Extinguishers inspected and ready for use.
☑️ Required extinguishers positioned within the permitted distance.
☑️ Combustible materials removed or adequately protected.
☑️ Fire watch and emergency arrangements confirmed.
☑️ Hot work permit approved and valid.
☑️ Workers briefed on fire hazards and emergency actions.
☑️ Post-work fire monitoring arrangements established.
🛑 STOP. CHECK. PROTECT.
No permit. No protection. No hot work.
🔥 Prevent fires.
🧯 Protect lives.
👷 Work safely.
