Burns – First Aid | Workplace Safety ;

 Burns – First Aid | Workplace Safety ;

Burns can happen in seconds in a factory, food-processing plant, workshop or construction site. They may be caused by hot surfaces, steam, hot liquids, fire, chemicals or electricity. Quick and correct first aid can reduce skin damage, relieve pain and help prevent further injury.

First aid for burns: Step by step

1. Stop the burning process

Move the injured person away from the heat source, but do not put yourself at risk. Isolate the equipment if it is safe to do so.

2. Cool the burn

Hold the affected area under cool running water for 20 minutes. Remove nearby jewellery or loose clothing if it is safe; never pull off material stuck to the skin.

3. Cover the injured area

After cooling, cover the burn loosely with a sterile, non-stick dressing or clean, non-fluffy material. Do not wrap tightly.

4. Get medical help

Seek urgent medical attention for deep, large or serious burns, burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals or major joints, and any suspected electrical or chemical burn.

What should you NEVER do?

Never apply ice or iced water to the burn.

Never apply toothpaste, butter, oil or home remedies.

Never break blisters or remove clothing stuck to the skin.

Never touch an electrical casualty until the power source is isolated and the scene is safe.

Important safety message

• Ensure first-aid kits and trained first-aiders are available in the plant.

• Display emergency contact numbers near high-risk work areas.

• Train workers handling steam lines, hot oil, chemicals and hot equipment.

• For chemical burns, protect yourself from exposure, remove contaminated

clothing when safe, irrigate the affected area immediately and arrange urgent medical assistance. Follow the chemical safety data sheet and emergency procedures.

Remember: Cool the burn, cover it safely and seek medical help when needed. Every second counts!
