This poster is a LOTO standard by the department. It's how many plants make sure nobody gets hurt by accidental start-up.
LOTO = Lockout / Tagout
The core idea is simple: ISOLATE - SECURE - PROTECT
Before you work on any equipment, you:
Isolate the energy source
Lock it with your personal lock so it CAN'T be turned on
Tag it with a DANGER tag that says who locked it and when
That prevents accidental energy release. That's what saves lives.
The slogan on top says it all: Right Lock • Right Tag • Right Colour • Safer Workplace
Why different colours?
In a big facility, many teams work at the same time. Colour coding lets anyone see at a glance who locked what, and what kind of energy is locked.
Red lock = Electrical work happening
Blue lock = Mechanical work happening
etc.
You are not allowed to use another department's colour unless you are authorized. Your lock is your life.
Here is the breakdown from your poster:
1. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - RED
Where: panels, switchgear, motors, control systems
Energy: electrical power, stored energy in capacitors, control circuits
Red is always the most critical because electrical shock is invisible and immediate.
2. MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT - BLUE
Where: pumps, compressors, conveyors, rotating equipment, valves
Energy: moving parts, stored energy in springs/tension, pressurized systems
3. PROCESS / CHEMICAL DEPARTMENT - YELLOW
Where: pipelines, reactors, tanks, chemical handling
Energy: chemical reactions, pressure (gas/steam/liquid), extreme temperature, gravity from tanks/vessels
4. HVAC DEPARTMENT - GREEN
Where: heating, ventilation, AC, refrigeration
Energy: electrical, mechanical (fans/belts), pressure (refrigerants), thermal
5. INSTRUMENTATION & CONTROL - ORANGE
Where: control valves, transmitters, PLCs, I/O panels
Energy: electrical, pneumatic (compressed air), hydraulic, process pressure
6. MAINTENANCE / GENERAL SERVICES - PURPLE
Where: workshops, facilities, general equipment
Energy: multiple - electrical, mechanical, hydraulic/pneumatic. Purple is the generalist because maintenance touches everything.
7. FIRE & SAFETY / EMERGENCY SYSTEMS - BLACK
Where: fire pumps, sprinklers, alarms, emergency power
Energy: electrical, mechanical, pressurized, battery/UPS. You NEVER lock this without very strict authorization because you are disabling life safety.
8. R&D / LABORATORY - TEAL
Where: lab equipment, fume hoods, analytical instruments
Energy: electrical, chemical, pressure from gas cylinders, temperature
The bottom part
LOTO Colour Key Summary is the quick check you put on the LOTO board.
REMEMBER:
Use the correct lock and tag for your department
Never borrow another colour
Always follow the full procedure: proper isolation, verify zero energy, and proper re-energisation
LOTO is a team effort
And LOCK IT. TAG IT. LIVE IT. means if you lock and tag correctly, you go home safe.
This colour system is not universal by law, every company can define its own colours, but this RED=Electrical, BLUE=Mechanical, YELLOW=Process pattern is very common in oil & gas and manufacturing in Nigeria and globally. 🚧🚥🏗️🚨🚦⚠️🦺🗼🌡️⛑️
