Water balance is the relationship between water entering, leaving, and being stored within a specific area, such as a watershed, soil layer, lake, or groundwater system.
Main Components:
1-Precipitation (P) Rain, snow, and other water entering the system.
2-Evapotranspiration (ET) Water lost through evaporation and plant transpiration.
3-Runoff (R) Water flowing over the land into rivers and streams.
4-Infiltration & Groundwater Flow Water entering the soil and moving underground.
5-Storage (ΔS) Changes in water stored in soil, lakes, snow, reservoirs, and groundwater.
P = ET + R + I + ΔS
Understanding water balance helps us manage water resources, floods, droughts, irrigation, groundwater, and ecosystems more effectively.
